Chhath Puja 2024: Why is the Soop Used in Chhath Puja, and How Did This Tradition Begin?

In Hinduism, using bamboo soop (winnowing basket) in Chhath Puja holds great significance. Bamboo is a product of nature. It refers to nature. Here, elements are being worshiped as part of the rituals of Chhath Puja. So, bamboo products are available in all sorts of related rituals, considered pure and holy. Significance of Bamboo Soop in Chhath Puja 2024 Rituals
It falls on the sixth day of the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. The Shashti Tithi for 2024 begins at 12:41 AM of November 7 and ends at 12:34 AM of November 8. So, Chhath Puja will be on November 7 followed by the evening offering that day and the morning offering the following day, and then the fast will be broken.

Items made of bamboo, such as baskets, soop, and trays, are a must for this festival. While performing the Surya Arghya, the soop is used to hold fruits, thekua, and other items as offerings. The items are carried in bamboo soops, baskets, or daura to the riverbank, where the devotees offer their prayers to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya. As per beliefs, rituals carried out with the assistance of products from bamboo attract good luck, bliss in family life, and overcome life's challenges. In this sense, the soop of bamboo fulfills all the offerings of Chhath Puja and reflects a deep bond with nature and blessings.
