In the Shyamdasani family in Kanpur, disaster loomed in on Diwali night with a fire in the family's luxurious bungalow that caused the death of businessman Sanjay Shyamdasani, his wife, Kanika, and domestic help, Chhavi, due to smoke suffocation. Sanjay was one of the top entrepreneurs of Kanpur after three decades of relentless effort by transforming the small grocery store into a giant empire consisting of many franchises such as Parle-G biscuits.

Kanpur Tycoon, Family Die in Diwali Fire

The Shyamdasani family had recently renovated their house, fitting wooden interiors and a false ceiling. They also fitted soundproof electronic doors and windows. Experts believe that these enhancements led to the tragic incident because the electronic doors and windows jammed due to the fire, trapping the family inside and accelerating the spread of flames due to the woodwork.

It apparently started on the upper floor where Sanjay and his wife were sleeping. Their son had gone out with friends at the time of the blaze. As part of its investigation, it is investigating the possibility that the fire could have been an accident by their pet cat, whose suspicion has risen that it might have knocked over the oil lamp in the temple area, which had caught onto the flammable decor. Unfortunately, the cat also died in the fire, and the authorities have even done a postmortem on the animal to learn more.

Fire safety experts advise people to have ventilation on homes since a fully closed, air-conditioned apartment is very dangerous during such catastrophes. They argue that if the doors of this home were not electrical, and if it could be well ventilated, a better opportunity would have allowed the family to get out of it. The incident leaves everyone gloomy but at the same time gives an urgent necessity to talk about fire safety in today's well-closed houses.
