Gold Smuggling Goes Bold: Man Held With Over 1 Kg Of Gold Concealed Inside His Body At Jaipur Airport
JAIPUR: A man was caught trying to smuggle more than one kilogram of gold in his body at the Jaipur International Airport recently. The man, Mahendra Khan, had come to Jaipur from Abu Dhabi on an Etihad Airways flight and was found concealing gold capsules in his rectum.
The officials mentioned that they had earlier received information that Khan was attempting to bring gold into the country. He was detained at a routine checkup when the X-ray scan showed some capsule-shaped objects inside his body. The customs officers suspected smuggling and arrested him and took him to the nearest hospital for further investigations.
Doctors at Jaipur's Jaipuria Hospital performed a procedure to extract gold from Khan's rectum. Three pieces of gold were separately removed, and in total weight, they weighed over a kilogram. The confiscated gold is estimated to value around 9 million rupees, or about 108,000 USD.
During the interrogation, it came out that Khan has sought help from a paramedical staff of that region in order to plant gold capsules inside his body to evade customs checking during the time of landing. Customs officials have lodged an FIR against Khan who has not left the hospital but is being kept under vigil.
This incident is a reminder of the alertness of the custom people at Jaipur Airport. Of late, in the past couple of months, attempts of gold smuggling have come to light. The official stated that other accomplices in this case are under probe.
