Maharashtra political drama: Devendra Fadnavis hits back at the comments of Kanhaiya Kumar on his wife, attacks opposition ahead of elections

Maharashtra politics is running hot as Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, reacted sharply against Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar for making controversial comments about his wife, Amruta Fadnavis. The incident has triggered a political storm at a time when Maharashtra is just weeks away from the polls scheduled for November 20, 2024.
However, recent personal comments made by Kanhaiya Kumar against Fadnavis's wife shocked him, Devendra Fadnavis said. He alleged that the opposition was attacking his wife Amruta Fadnavis as a diversionary tactic, and that the opposition parties, realizing their defeat at the hands of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, have started targeting at individuals. He termed the comments "shameful" and asked the opposition leaders "drown in water" for their acts.
He himself was slammed for photos of collecting bamboo sticks on his social media handle and also blamed the opposition for targeting his wife after she posted a reel on Instagram. If educated people see the kind of memes and comments against my wife, they would be ashamed, he said. The BJP leader also added that such attacks were a sign of frustration from a side that could not compete on the political front. He went on to state that he would emerge victorious in any political battle, further emphasizing his patience and discipline in dealing with such issues.
In this context, Fadnavis also targeted NCP leader Sharat Pawar. He said that Pawar is the "Bhishma Pitamah" of Indian politics and that he had divided political parties and families. This statement reflects the heightened political tensions between BJP and NCP ahead of the state assembly elections.
As the date for the election draws near, Fadnavis' remarks have ignited an intense debate between the two alliances that will clash at the polls: the ruling Mahayuti, an alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar's NCP, and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. Voting for the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly takes place on November 20 and the results are scheduled to be announced on November 23.
The personal and ideological fights will fuel this volatile political environment in Maharashtra only as the battle for political supremacy intensifies. How far these words influence voter sentiment or lead to increased polarisation remains to be seen in the run-up to these elections.
