Monsoon Watch: The Biggest Weather Updates You Need to Know
Here's a look at the key developments.
Maharashtra Battles the Worst Spell of Rain
Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state as relentless rainfall continues to disrupt normal life. Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and surrounding districts have witnessed flooded roads, uprooted trees, disrupted transport services and multiple structural collapses. Schools and colleges in Mumbai have been shut as a precaution, while authorities have urged private offices to allow employees to work from home.
The situation has turned even more serious in Ratnagiri, where a landslide buried several houses, triggering large-scale rescue operations. In Thane, authorities have temporarily banned entry to waterfalls, forts, rivers and other popular tourist spots to prevent accidents during the ongoing spell of heavy rain.
Pune and Nashik are also on high alert. Schools have been closed in several talukas, temple visits at Trimbakeshwar were suspended, and emergency teams remain deployed as heavy rainfall continues. Over the past few days, multiple rain-related deaths have been reported across Maharashtra, highlighting the severity of this year's monsoon.
Delhi-NCR Finally Gets Relief
After days of intense heat and humidity, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad finally received widespread showers. The rainfall brought temperatures down and offered much-needed relief to residents.
However, the rain also caused traffic congestion across several parts of the capital, with waterlogging reported in areas including Saket, Malviya Nagar and Safdarjung. The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert, warning that more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely over the next few days.
Uttar Pradesh Under Heavy Rain Alert
The India Meteorological Department has placed several districts of Uttar Pradesh under heavy rainfall alerts as active monsoon conditions continue across northern India. Authorities are closely monitoring river levels and low-lying areas, especially in eastern Uttar Pradesh, where localized flooding remains a concern. Residents have been advised to stay alert as thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to continue over the coming days.
Kerala and the Western Coast Remain Vulnerable
Heavy rainfall has also battered Kerala, where a landslide in Wayanad claimed lives and left rescue teams searching for those trapped under debris. National Disaster Response Force personnel, police and local authorities are continuing rescue operations as the state remains vulnerable to landslides during the active monsoon phase.
Travel Disruptions Continue
The weather has affected transportation across several states. In Mumbai, waterlogging disrupted suburban rail services and led to the cancellation of multiple local trains, while flights experienced delays due to poor visibility and strong winds. Travellers heading to the Western Ghats and other hill regions are being advised to check weather updates before starting their journey.
What Lies Ahead
According to the India Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon is expected to remain active over large parts of the country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and several other states over the next 24 to 48 hours. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also expected in many regions.
The monsoon remains vital for India's agriculture and water resources, but this week's events are also a reminder of its destructive side. As rainfall intensifies, following official advisories, avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather and staying updated with local forecasts could make all the difference.
