Nitin Gadkari Take on Election Freebies: Think Beyond the Instant Reward

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday raised concerns about the growing trend of political parties offering election freebies to attract voters. Speaking on the matter, Gadkari urged the public to consider the long-term benefits of sustainable development rather than being swayed by the promise of immediate rewards during election time.

Nitin Gadkari highlighted that political parties are increasingly using freebies as a tool to secure votes. However, he warned voters to evaluate these offers carefully. According to Gadkari, while freebies may provide instant gratification, they often come at the cost of the nation’s long-term growth. “People need to think carefully. Do they want short-term rewards or long-term benefits?” Gadkari said, stressing that elections should focus on sustainable development and policies that strengthen the economy.

As political parties compete to offer the most appealing freebies, they have created a culture where voters expect handouts. Gadkari pointed out that once one party began distributing freebies, others followed, resulting in a bidding war over promises of financial assistance. He noted that this trend has made people more inclined to vote for the party offering the most immediate rewards, but warned that such decisions might not benefit the country in the long run.

In his trademark straightforward manner, Gadkari addressed the issue humorously, saying, “If Kejriwal offers Rs 1,000, we will offer Rs 1,500; if they offer Rs 1,500, we will give Rs 2,000. Take whatever you get, but vote wisely.” He emphasized the importance of voters thinking carefully about their choices and supporting policies that promise long-term improvement, not just short-term handouts.

Despite the political landscape, Gadkari expressed his unwavering commitment to serving every citizen, regardless of their voting choices. He stated, “I will work for the one who votes for me, and I will work for the one who doesn’t vote for me as well,” reaffirming his dedication to public service.

When asked about slogans like "batenge to katenge" and "ek hai to safe hai" used in the recent elections, Gadkari distanced himself from aggressive political rhetoric. Instead, he emphasized that his focus remains on development and long-term projects. "I did not indulge in negative politics or make accusations. Does a man die if he doesn’t get elected?" Gadkari remarked, showing that his priorities lie in the nation's growth and progress.

Gadkari also discussed plans for innovative public transport solutions, including a pilot project in Nagpur that will feature an 18-meter electric bus with flash charging. The bus, which will have a hostess and offer ticket rates 30% cheaper than diesel buses, represents a step toward cleaner, more efficient transportation options for the future.

Gadkari addressed the issue of delays in national highway projects, explaining that factors like land acquisition, environmental clearances, and contract disputes are the primary reasons for the hold-ups. However, he also shared that many stalled projects worth Rs 3.85 lakh crore were revived under his leadership, with over Rs 40,000 crore worth of projects now back on track.
