Railway Ministry Launches Special Ticket Checking Teams to Curb Fare Evasion Ahead of Festivals

Chennai — As the Navaratri and Diwali festivals approach, the Railway Ministry has announced the deployment of special ticket checking teams to combat the rising issue of passengers traveling without tickets. The ministry's directive comes amid growing concerns over individuals occupying reserved seats without valid tickets, even in advance booking compartments.

Train travel remains the preferred mode of transport for many, especially for families with children and the elderly, who value the comfort and facilities provided. However, during festival periods, the demand for train journeys surges, often leading to overcrowding and fare evasion.

Typically, travelers book their tickets up to 120 days in advance for these busy travel seasons. Yet, recent trends show an alarming increase in passengers disregarding reservation protocols, causing discomfort for those who have legitimately booked their seats. Reports indicate that even premium trains are witnessing this issue, leading to frustration among travelers.

In response to passenger complaints, the Railway Ministry has sent letters to the 17 divisional heads, emphasizing the need for stringent checks. It has also instructed that ticket checkers must be on high alert from October 1 to 15 and again from October 25 to November 10, especially during the busy travel days surrounding the festivals.

The ministry has urged that not only regular passengers but also police traveling without tickets should be subject to these checks. This initiative aims to ensure a smoother travel experience during peak times, alleviating concerns about overcrowding and fare evasion, and has been welcomed by many passengers.
