Jaipur Police have arrested a man who posed as an IRS officer and a fake Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau. The accused, Sarvesh Kumawat, claimed to be an IRS officer posted in Jaipur. He contacted women on social media, saying he was a senior government official, to earn their trust and later demand money from them.
Fake IRS Officer Arrested by Jaipur Police
He targeted more than 25 women, out of which three were targeted in Jaipur, where he misrepresented himself and used his said position.
Uncovering the Scam: A Sub-Inspector's Report
The scam came to fore when Kritika Goyal, a female sub-inspector with the NCB filed a complaint against Kumawat in Vidhyadhar Nagar Police Station, Jaipur. She said that calls were coming from her brother and friend in which he was introducing himself as Sarvesh Kumawat, a Zonal Director of NCB Jaipur and IRS officer from the 2020 batch. In no time, knowing senior officials in her department, she realized all was not well. She lodged a complaint, and police surveillance resulted in the arrest of Kumawat on 9 November. He was caught in a hotel on Ajmer Road as he was meeting one of his victims.
Ruse Methodology and Ransom Based on Money Extortion
Kumawat, posing before women as an officer, used to impress upon them that he needed urgent money for blockage of his bank account or some other reason. He would have built a sense of urgency to make his victims send the money. Investigation into his phone revealed conversations with over 25 women, mostly government employees, and explicit messages in his chat history. The police also claimed that there is no officer by the name of Sarvesh Kumawat in the NCB, and that his whole identity is an imaginary phenomenon. The case revealed his systematic exploitation of several women who lost money as a result.
