Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Tirupati Laddu Ghee Quality Allegations, Calls for Detailed Investigation

In a recent hearing regarding the Tirupati Laddu Prasad controversy, the Supreme Court expressed serious concerns over allegations that substandard ghee was used in the preparation of the sacred offering. The case, which involves accusations of adulteration with animal fat, has triggered an intense debate about the quality of ingredients used in the revered prasad.

Allegations of Political Motive

The Andhra Pradesh government, represented by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, argued that the case is politically motivated and aimed at targeting the state government. Rohatgi stated that the petition, filed by Subramanian Swamy and other petitioners, was primarily a political attack rather than a genuine concern over religious practices. The petitioners, including journalist Suresh Chavhanke, sought a court-monitored investigation into the alleged adulteration, claiming that religious sentiments were being hurt.

Supreme Court's Concerns

The Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K.V. Viswanathan, questioned the authenticity of the ghee used in preparing the Tirupati Laddu. The court noted that while the issue is sensitive, the evidence presented so far does not conclusively prove the use of substandard or adulterated ingredients. Justice Viswanathan raised a critical point, asking, “Where is the proof that the ghee used in making the laddus was the same as the one tested?”

The court also criticized the Andhra Pradesh government for going to the press prematurely with the findings, pointing out that the lab report, which emerged in July, was not fully conclusive. The report, according to the court, did not clearly indicate the quality of the materials used in the preparation of the sacred prasad. The court questioned the government’s motive for releasing the report to the public before the investigation was complete.

Investigation and Public Sentiment

The petitioners argued that if there were any doubts about the quality of the prasad, a thorough investigation should be conducted. They expressed concerns over the use of privately-sourced ghee in recent years, with some vendors facing allegations of providing substandard products. Justice Gavai emphasized the need for respect toward religious sentiments, urging the government to handle the matter sensitively.
