Shivamogga on High Alert Ahead of Ganesh Festival: Lessons from Last Year's Riots
Shivamogga, Sept. 6 — As the Ganesh Chaturthi festival approaches, authorities in Shivamogga are on high alert, taking lessons from last year's violent riots. The city, known for its sensitivity to communal tensions, is bracing for potential challenges as the festival coincides with Eid Milad.
Police Prepare for Peaceful Celebrations
The Shivamogga district, which has witnessed significant unrest during past festivals, is under heightened surveillance this year. Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar has been actively involved in peacekeeping efforts for the past month, conducting meetings and organizing security arrangements. The focus is on ensuring that the Ganesh immersion processions, particularly those organized by the Hindu Mahasabha, proceed without incident.
Preventive Measures in Place
To avoid a repeat of last year's clashes, which were sparked by provocative flexes and cutouts in Ragigudda, authorities have implemented strict measures. Section 144, which prohibits gatherings, was enforced for 15 days during the previous incidents, and similar precautions are in place this year. The district's administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde, has issued orders to prevent the display of inflammatory materials.
Ongoing Peace Meetings
In an effort to maintain harmony, peace meetings involving leaders from both communities have been held regularly. These discussions aim to address any potential flashpoints and ensure a smooth celebration. The police have also conducted patrols in sensitive areas, supported by the Rapid Action Force (RAF), to maintain order.
Hindu Mahasabha's Grand Preparations
Meanwhile, the Hindu Mahasabha is preparing for a grand Ganesh installation at the Kote Bhimeshwara Temple premises. The city is being decorated extensively, with elaborate setups planned at key locations such as Ramanna Shresthi Park, Gandhi Bazaar, and Nehru Road. The Hindu Mahasabha is committed to making this year's Ganesh immersion a spectacular event while ensuring it remains peaceful.
Authorities and community leaders are working together to foster a sense of unity and ensure that the festivals are celebrated in a safe and harmonious environment.
