Heavy Rainfall Alert: Schools Shut in Tamil Nadu Districts as IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Coastal Areas - Read Now

Heavy showers are expected in several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu for the entire week. Heavy rainfall has been forecasted; schools and colleges have been closed in some districts. Schools and colleges in Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal in Puducherry have declared holidays. Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Perambalur closed schools in anticipation of heavy rains.
IMD Yellow Alert and Rainfall Forecast
More than 15 districts in Tamil Nadu have been put on yellow alert by the IMD with the formation of low-pressure over Bay of Bengal bringing intense rains to the region. As a part of this warning, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Kanyakumari are the key districts. Isolated heavy falls might occur there. Other districts also under alert include Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, and Madurai.
This low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal is expected to continue to intensify further. In Chennai and its peripherals, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur - rains are likely to exceed 10 cm. The warning released by the weather department is valid until November 15 and believes that the rains may continue for some more days.
More Rainfall In the offing in Coastal Areas
For the coastal areas comprising Puducherry, Karaikal and from Thiruvallur to Ramanathapuram, rainfall is expected to increase over its ranges from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. The wind speeds would also touch 55 kmph in some coastal areas which make weather challenging.
The forecast in Chennai is widely overcast skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms, which should continue for the next two days. Therefore, through October so far, 43 cm has fallen in Chennai, which is only marginally above normal. Continued rain will continue throughout the city, and localized flooding can be expected to occur in low-lying areas.
School Shutdowns and Related Safety Measures
Since heavy rainfall is likely to occur because of the low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal, says the IMD, the local authorities in various districts have declared holidays in schools. In the district Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal, Puducherry, schools and colleges have declared off, while Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Perambalur had schools only off. This is done to save students from the intense weather conditions, preventing other types of problems also while traveling.
Low-Pressure System: Following the Low-Pressure System
As the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is intensifying, rainfall activity might increase in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. The weather scenario is under close surveillance of the IMD, and with a yellow alert, inhabitants are requested to keep tabs on weather warnings. Being under the light of a yellow alert, administrations still are ready to take actions on deteriorating weather conditions.
This weather, which spells heavy rainfall and school closures, actually has the safety on top of its agenda since Tamil Nadu goes through it. As per the IMD's request, people must be cautious, especially in the coastal areas, even as the rain continues to hinder daily and travel activities.
