Tamil Nadu Weather: Yellow Alert as Heavy Rain Forecast in 18 Districts; Downpour in Chennai Starting Nov 22

Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in 18 districts of Tamil Nadu for Sunday, November 17. According to the forecast, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, among several other districts, will see heavy showers in large quantities. Southern and central areas of the state and some places in districts will witness very heavy rainfall in the form of thunderstorm and lightning too.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast : Chennai and other northern districts along the coast are also expected to see an intensification of rains on November 22. According to Chennai weather forecast, there will be moderate to heavy rainfall in the city accompanied by cloud cover and evening showers. Heftier showers may occur over Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram districts.

The southern districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall, while most of Tamil Nadu, in general, is likely to get normal or below-normal rainfall in November 22 to 28. Meanwhile, Northeast Monsoon is continuously going to make its mark over the state, well into this period.

The Northeast Monsoon period from October 1 to November 15 has brought 276 mm of rain to Tamil Nadu. The highest in the state was recorded at Coimbatore with 418 mm, which was 67% above normal levels. While many districts reported excess, some reported deficits, including the Chennai district. The Northeast Monsoon has brought relief in the form of water supply but has also given challenges in the form of a rise in viral diseases in the state.

Heavy rains have caused a tremendous surge in saving electricity in Tamil Nadu, according to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, or Tangedco. A prima facie account put electricity consumption today down by 302 million units from last October's 380 million units. The reasons for the decline are mainly due to cool weather, which has dampened the need for air-conditioning and refrigeration in residential and agricultural sectors.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has raised alarm bells about the sharp increase in viral diseases such as fever and influenza, which have been rising in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts. All these health-related issues are going to continue with ongoing rains and swinging temperatures.
