Tirupati Laddu Controversy Unveiled: TTD's Dramatic 'Purification Ritual' in Kitchens After Allegations of Beef Tallow in Sacred Ghee
The ongoing controversy surrounding the famous Tirupati laddus took a significant turn as the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) performed a purification ritual on Monday in the kitchens where these sacred prasadam are prepared. This decision came in response to allegations that “beef tallow” was used in the ghee for the laddus, raising concerns among devotees.
The Mahashanti Yagam ritual was initiated following directives from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who called for special investigations into the claims regarding the use of animal fat in the preparation of the revered laddus. The TTD acknowledged that an error had occurred, revealing that some prasadam offered to the deity may have been made with adulterated ghee. In light of this, the board organized the purification ritual to rectify the mistake and restore the temple's sanctity.

Offering prasad and laddus made with adulterated ghee to Lord Venkateswara resulted in a mistake.
To atone for this, TTD performed Mahashanti Yagam as a purification ritual.

During the Mahashanti Yagam, the TTD employed panchagavya—five sacred substances used in Hindu rituals—to purify both the laddoo and prasadam kitchens. Additionally, the entire temple premises were cleansed as part of the purification process. The ritual was attended by eight priests and three agama advisors, along with Shyamala Rao, the executive officer of TTD, and other board officials, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
This ritual not only aims to address the allegations but also seeks to reassure devotees of the sanctity of the prasadam, which holds immense significance for pilgrims visiting the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala. The TTD's swift action reflects its commitment to maintaining the spiritual integrity of the temple and the trust of its devotees.
