UP Unveils Night Parking Charges: Say Goodbye to Free Street Parking with New ₹100 Fee and More!
In a significant move to regulate nighttime vehicle parking, the Urban Development Department of Uttar Pradesh is set to implement a new parking system. Effective across major cities, including Lucknow, this initiative will require motorists to pay a fee for parking on streets during nighttime hours. The plan aims to curb the existing practice of free street parking, imposing charges ranging from ₹100 per night to ₹10,000 annually.
New Parking Charges:
Under the new system, motorists parking on the streets at night will incur a fee of ₹100 per night. Additionally, a weekly charge of ₹300, a monthly fee of ₹1,000, and an annual fee of ₹10,000 will be instituted. Officials also stated that those parking without a permit will face a penalty of three times the regular fee.
Approval Process:
The new parking policy will be formally introduced following approval from the state cabinet. Amrit Abhijat, the principal secretary of urban development, has sought objections on the Provisional Rules 2024 from the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation. Suggestions will be reviewed before submitting the proposal for cabinet approval.
Restrictions on Parking Locations:
The parking charges will also apply to private locations such as multi-level car parks, car bars, salons, and spas. However, street parking in open or underground spaces will not be allowed. Licenses will be issued for those offering commercial parking services.
Rationale Behind the Decision:
This initiative aims to enhance urban management by preventing vehicles from occupying public spaces overnight. By introducing parking fees, the government hopes to encourage the use of designated parking areas, thereby improving traffic flow and urban aesthetics.
Upcoming Implementation:
While the system is in the final stages of approval, residents and frequent nighttime travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming changes to avoid unexpected fees. The move promises to reshape the parking landscape in Uttar Pradesh's bustling cities.
