Weather Update: Fog Blankets Delhi NCR, Severe Cold Alert for UP, Bihar
The weather in Delhi NCR switched overnight. Heavy fog engulfed the city, slowing traffic while sending quite clear signals that the winter has begun. A severe cold alert has been sounded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for several northern states including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as temperatures continue to drop. Dense fog has dipped visibility in various places, significantly affecting traffic movement, forcing the diversion of several flights due to low visibility at Delhi's IGI Airport.
Weather Update: Heavy Fog Hits Delhi NCR
According to the IMD, fog spread in multiple areas of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, western Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh, drastically reducing visibility. Several places reported near-zero visibility, including Amritsar and Adampur in Punjab, IGI in Delhi, Suratgarh in Rajasthan, and Hindon Airport and Bareilly in UP. Minimum temperature in Delhi NCR reduced over the last 24 hours and increased winter bite. Maximum temperatures hovered between 30-33°C, while minimums ranged between 14-18°C.
Aside from the thick fog, high pollution levels are also a double whammy for the residents of Delhi with the possibility of sustaining for the days to come. According to the IMD, it says that the current foggy and wintry conditions will continue for some time and thus advises caution for those stepping out early in the morning or later at night.
Dense Fog in Northern and Eastern India
Dense to very dense fog is forecast for north west India over the next five days, with minimum temperatures sliding 2-3° C during this period. Dense fog is likely over UP and Punjab from November 15 and over Himachal Pradesh from November 18 nights up to early mornings. Haryana, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand can expect foggy conditions from November 16.
Meanwhile, Vidarbha in Maharashtra registered 11.4°C as the minimum temperature and heralded the beginning of badly biting shivering across central India.

In view of this, the IMD predicts that mist and temperature drop will intensify and hence issued a safety alert for people dwelling in the affected regions to be ready for colder mornings and exercise caution on the roads with lesser visibility. As the onset of winter sets in, northern states prepare for more chilled days- ushering in a more pronounced season change across the region.
