What India's Autism Community Says It Needs Most — And It's Not What You'd Expect

India’s autism community identifies speech and language therapy as a key priority, highlighting the need for accessible communication support. Online therapy is helping families access qualified professionals beyond major cities.

One special place Autism community

When surveyed directly, India's autism community — including parents and autistic adults themselves — was clear about priorities. A nationwide scoping study of the Indian autism community found that speech and language therapy was rated the single highest-priority intervention, ahead of many other forms of support that receive far more public attention.

That finding matters because access to that specific therapy remains geographically uneven in India — concentrated in metro cities, with long waitlists and limited specialists in smaller towns. It's part of why teletherapy has grown from a convenience into, for many families, the only realistic path to a qualified therapist at all.

"Speech and language therapy" doesn't only mean teaching a child to talk. For many autistic children — verbal or not — it means building any reliable way to communicate: gestures, picture systems, communication devices, or spoken language, whichever fits the child. For verbal autistic children, it often shifts toward the social side of communication — understanding conversation, tone, and turn-taking — which can matter more day-to-day than pronunciation.

Providers working in this space, including Noida-founded 1SpecialPlace, have built specifically toward this gap — offering both in-centre and online autism communication support, which extends access beyond families able to reach a specialist center in person.

The survey data is a useful reminder for families outside major cities: the therapy the community itself ranks as most needed doesn't have to depend on living near one of the country's handful of specialist centers.
