UPI Scam Alert: Thieves use app to steal money, warns Tamil Nadu police
A new development that causes concern, the Tamil Nadu police have put out a critical warning in respect of an increasing UPI scam targeting users across the state. Scammers are now sending out a fake app resembling the "PM Kisan Yojna" app, which they share via WhatsApp. Once downloaded on a user's device, the malicious app takes over their SMS and device permissions. It then allows fraudsters to intercept sensitive information and even authorize unauthorized UPI transactions.
The scam has led to an increase in financial distress among several individuals who have fallen victims to the fraud. The application collects personal information such as Aadhaar number, PAN, and date of birth, and then uses it to register devices on UPI platforms. With this access, the scammers can easily initiate fraudulent transactions by transferring funds to accounts such as Amazon Pay without users' consent.
The Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has warned that these fraudsters specifically target UPI applications like PhonePe, manipulating the app to siphon funds. The scam relies on exploiting the trust people place in government schemes like "PM Kisan Yojna" and creating a sense of urgency, tricking users into downloading the malicious app.
To protect yourself from falling victim to such UPI scams, the police recommend the following safety measures:
Download Apps Only from Official Sources. Avoid downloading apps from unauthorized sources or links sent in the WhatsApp or other unauthenticated media. Use only trusted, official government websites and verified application stores like Google Play for finance apps.
Be Wary of Unexpected Messages: Avoid urgent messages or requests that ask you to download apps or share personal information. High-pressure tactics are typical in scamming people into doing something they wouldn't normally do.
Enable Two-Step Verification: Enable two-step verification in your UPI apps to have another layer of security.
Report Suspicious Activity: In case you find any unauthorized transactions or suspect that your account has been compromised, report it to the authorities and the bank immediately.
With these highly sophisticated UPI scams, the users need to be alert and must take all measures to protect their personal data and financial assets. By being cautious and following these guidelines, you will not become a victim of the scammers.
