NASA Issues Alert: 2024 YR4 Asteroid Headed Toward Earth

NASA Issues Alert: NASA has raised an alert about asteroid 2024 YR4, which is rapidly approaching Earth. Scientists estimate that by December 22, 2032, the asteroid has a 3.1% chance of impact, potentially causing catastrophic destruction in affected regions.

How Big is 2024 YR4?

The asteroid was first detected on December 27, 2024, by Chile’s El Sauce Observatory. Based on its brightness, scientists estimate it to be between 130 to 300 feet wide. The asteroid is believed to be composed of rare metals.

Potential Impact and Risk Areas

If 2024 YR4 were to hit Earth, it could unleash an explosion with a force of 8 megatons of TNT—about 500 times stronger than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Predicted areas at risk include parts of Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) as well as countries in Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria) and South America (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador).

What’s Next?

Beginning next month, the James Webb Space Telescope will monitor the asteroid closely. Experts at the International Asteroid Warning Network will continue gathering data, which may eventually show a reduced likelihood of collision. Although the risk currently remains low, ongoing observations will help scientists refine their predictions.

By keeping a close watch, the scientific community aims to assess the asteroid’s path and prepare for any potential scenarios well in advance.
