The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Union government, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust on petitions seeking a court-monitored CBI investigation into the alleged theft of donations collected at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The petitions have raised concerns over the handling of donations made by devotees and questioned whether the investigation should remain with the state police or be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The petitioners have argued that the matter involves public faith and substantial public donations, making an independent probe necessary to ensure transparency and accountability.

What Is the Case About?

The controversy stems from allegations that cash and other offerings made by devotees at the Ram Temple were stolen by individuals associated with the temple's security or management system. Following the complaints, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered cases and arrested several accused. Investigators also recovered a portion of the allegedly stolen money during the course of the investigation.

Despite these arrests, the petitioners approached the Supreme Court, claiming that the investigation should be handed over to the CBI to rule out any possibility of bias and to ensure public confidence in the outcome.

Why Has the Supreme Court Stepped In?

The Supreme Court has not ordered a CBI investigation at this stage.

Instead, it has sought responses from the Centre, the Uttar Pradesh government and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust before deciding whether the circumstances warrant transferring the probe to the central agency.

Issuing a notice does not mean the Court has accepted the allegations or agreed that a CBI investigation is necessary. It simply means the Court believes the matter deserves to be heard after receiving responses from all concerned parties.

Why Is the Issue Significant?

The Ram Temple is one of India's most important religious sites, attracting lakhs of devotees from across the country. Every day, worshippers contribute donations as part of their religious faith.

Because of the scale of these offerings and the public importance of the temple, any allegation involving donations naturally attracts widespread attention. The case has also revived discussions about transparency, financial oversight and security arrangements at major religious institutions.

What Happens Next?

The Union government, the Uttar Pradesh government and the temple trust are expected to file their responses before the Supreme Court. After examining their replies, the Court will decide whether further directions are required, including whether the case should remain with the state police or be transferred to the CBI.

For now, the Court has only initiated the hearing process. The question of a CBI investigation remains undecided and will depend on the submissions made by all parties in the coming hearings.
