The Lawrence Bishnoi gang's claim of responsibility for murdering former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar faction head Baba Siddique has drawn much controversy. High Court Slams Punjab Police Over Lawrence Bishnoi’s Jail Interview
The accused, somehow, had managed to grant an interview from jail - allegedly, with studio-like facilities and a government-paid Wi-Fi connection - creating a public outcry over whether it is a criminal conspiracy.
The Punjab-Haryana High Court bench of Justices Anupinder Singh Grewal and Lapita Banerjee on Wednesday criticized the Punjab Police during the hearing of the case. The court noted that the facility offered to Bishnoi to give a televised interview in September 2022 at studio-level facilities was one that furthered the glorification of crime. The High Court was alarmed by the apparent dereliction on the part of the authorities and observed that such arrangements were only meant to enhance the public image of a criminal and threw up questions about the role of law enforcement in managing jail protocols.

The High Court constituted a three-member team to look into the matter, headed by DGP (Special) Prabodh Kumar. Kumar is a senior police official currently associated with the Punjab State Human Rights Commission and will lead the investigation into how the interview arrangements were facilitated. This has further disappointed the public for not seeing any consequences after the government of Punjab received orders on August 2024 to take disciplinary measures against those senior police officials involved in this scandalous episode. This incident reminds the ever-growing perception of lackluster safety security inside prisons, mishandling technology inside bars and the celebrity status by letting criminals attain media accesses with glamourous coverage to a variety of infamous criminals.
