Rahul Gandhi Parbhani Visit: Meeting Families Affected by Violence Sparks Political Debate

Rahul Gandhi Parbhani Visit: Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will on Dec 23, 2024, visit Parbhani, Maharashtra, to pay visit to the families of violence survivors in the region. Unrest broke out after vandalists attacked a replica of Constitution near Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar statue on Dec 10, 2024. Smt. Gandhi would see the family members of Somnath Suryavanshi who had succumbed to death due to police custody and the death of Vijay Wakode who died during the protest.

Political Reactions to Gandhi’s Visit

The BJP and Shiv Sena have criticized Gandhi’s visit, labeling it as political drama and hypocrisy. BJP state president Chandrashekar Bawankule stated that such actions would not help Congress regain its influence in Maharashtra. The opposition accuses Gandhi of using the visit as a strategic move rather than addressing core issues.

Context of the Violence

It was following the desecration of a glass-enclosed replica of the Constitution that the violence broke out. The cases of police brutality inside the custody, which claimed the lives of Suryavanshi and Wakode, have furthered public anger, and debate has started over law enforcement and accountability in the state.

Security Measures Before the Visit

Given the sensitive nature of the incident, security has been increased at Parbhani to prevent the situation from turning worse during the visit of Gandhi. Such a move goes to show that the situation is serious and even has a political and social fallout.
