In a phenomenal win for Indian cuisine, two Indian restaurants have made it to the Top 10 Most Legendary Restaurants in the world, as ranked by the recently published Taste Atlas Awards 2024-25. Seven Indian establishments featured in the 100 Most Legendary Restaurants, and this list saw two restaurants of India that feature on this list due to their sheer culinary excellence and historical value: Paragon Restaurant of Kozhikode at Rank 5 and Peter Cat in Kolkata at Rank 7.

Paragon Restaurant: Legacy of Flavors

Paragon Restaurant, established in 1939 in Kozhikode (formerly Calicut), has remained a pioneer of Malabar cuisine over the decades. Known for its iconic biryani, Paragon originally fused Moplah and Thiyya cuisines of the Malabar region. Today, it offers an extensive menu, yet the biryani continues to be a standout. With branches across India and even in Dubai, Paragon is an enduring symbol of authentic Indian flavors that continue to captivate diners worldwide.

Peter Cat: The Retro Icon of Kolkata

Peter Cat, which was founded in 1975 in Kolkata, has become a household name within the city. It is very popular for its chelo kebab, a dish that can be described as a true Indo-Iranian mix of cuisine. The combination of chicken and mutton kebabs served with butter rice and topped by a poached egg adds to its uniqueness. A retro atmosphere and red-and-gold interiors add nostalgic charm to this restaurant and make it a must-go destination for locals and tourists alike.

Other notable Indian restaurants on the list

Apart from Paragon and Peter Cat, there are other legendary Indian restaurants that have also made their mark on the Taste Atlas list. Amrik Sukhdev in Murthal, established in 1956, is celebrated for its aloo paratha and ranked 13th overall. Karim's in New Delhi, with its royal Mughlai delicacies, ranked 59th, while Central Tiffin Room (CTR) in Bengaluru earned the 69th spot for its famous masala dosa. Gulati in New Delhi, known for butter chicken, secured the 77th position, and Ram Ashraya in Mumbai, revered for its South Indian delicacies, ranked 78th.
