Bangladesh Law Adviser Urges India to Extradite Sheikh Hasina Under Treaty

In a significant development, a senior legal adviser of Bangladesh's interim government has called on India to extradite ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries. The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued an arrest warrant on October 18 against Hasina and 45 other members of the Awami League party, escalating tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul stated that India is legally bound to return Hasina if it adheres to the terms of the treaty. This comment came shortly after the tribunal directed the authorities to produce Hasina before the court by November 18, as she faces charges related to mass protests and violence during her tenure.

Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted amid widespread protests, has been residing in India since August 5. India's Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged her presence, stating she had come for safety reasons. However, the call for her extradition intensifies as the interim government prepares to prosecute her for her alleged involvement in student protests that claimed over 1,000 lives.
