China Protests Taiwan Office Opening in Mumbai, Calls for India to Uphold Diplomatic Commitment

China has lodged a diplomatic protest with India following the opening of Taiwan’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) office in Mumbai. On October 17, 2024, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated China’s strong opposition to any official ties or communication between Taiwan and countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China. According to Mao, Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory, and China firmly opposes the establishment of representative offices like the TECC in such countries.

Mao Ning highlighted that India has made a serious political commitment to the "One-China" principle, which forms the foundation of China-India relations. She urged India to strictly adhere to this commitment and to handle Taiwan-related matters with caution and prudence. Mao emphasized that India should avoid any official interactions with Taiwan that could disrupt the process of improving China-India relations.

China's protest came after Taiwan inaugurated its third office in India, following its branches in New Delhi and Chennai. The newly established TECC office in Mumbai aims to provide services in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The opening of this office has further heightened tensions between China and India, with Beijing urging New Delhi to prevent any actions that may hinder diplomatic ties. Taiwan’s move to expand its presence in India signals its intention to strengthen trade, cultural, and economic relations, especially with key Indian states.

As China continues to pressure India diplomatically, the situation has drawn global attention, with many watching how India navigates its relations with both China and Taiwan amid growing geopolitical complexities.
