India Overtakes Mexico and Russia: World's Largest Diaspora

According to the United Nations' World Migration Report 2022, India is now home to the world's largest diaspora. There were almost 17.9 million Indians living abroad in 2020, which pushed Mexico and Russia to second and third places respectively in the rankings of countries whose citizens are living overseas.

India's increase in migrants abroad is another tremendous change that has taken place within the past two decades, reaching 10 million. These migrants reflect a major trend in international migration. The rising Indians to the top in international migration are mainly due to rising prospects of jobs abroad. It indicates India's influence over the global arena as a supplier of migrant labor and other skilled professionals.

Among the top destination countries for Indian emigrants, the Gulf countries lead, and within them, the United Arab Emirates stand atop with a total of more than 3.47 million Indians. Saudi Arabia has around 2.5 million Indians among its expats, thus standing at third place. This migration is largely driven by employment opportunities, as these countries have thriving economies with high demand for workers in sectors like construction, hospitality, and healthcare.

The United States also continues to be a major destination for Indian migrants, with more than 2.7 million people residing in the U.S. This large migration is supported by India's strong educational and technological ties with the U.S. and the growing number of Indian professionals, especially in fields like information technology and engineering.

The Indian diaspora is part of a larger global trend. In 2020, the world witnessed 281 million international migrants, up from 173 million in 2000 and 221 million in 2010. This surge mirrors the growing mobility of people seeking better opportunities and a higher quality of life outside their home countries.
