Catastrophic 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Killing More Than 100, Tremors Felt in India, Nepal

A massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook Tibet near Mount Everest, killing over 100 people and injuring 62. The quake has led to destruction in Tingri County, with the tremors felt as far away as Nepal, India, and Bhutan. Operations are still going on at the site, with fears of aftershocks being held.

Over 100 Dead as 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Tibet, Tremors Felt Across India and Nepal

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Tibet in the early hours of Tuesday morning, killing over 100 and causing widespread destruction. Tingri County, which is near Mount Everest and is the epicenter of the quake, reported severe damage, with over 1,000 buildings either collapsed or heavily damaged. Neighboring Nepal and parts of northern India, including Bhutan and Sikkim, also felt the tremors.

The tremor, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) at 6:35 am, was followed by two aftershocks of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.9 at 7:02 am and 7:07 am, respectively. The U.S. Geological Survey also observed that the quake was shallow at a depth of 10 kilometers, which increased its destructive intensity. The magnitude was recorded to be 6.8 by China's earthquake monitoring agency.

Widespread Destruction in High Altitude Areas

Tingri County, which had about 62,000 people, suffered the full impact of the earthquake. State media reported that 62 were injured, while many buildings suffered huge structural damage. Social media photos taken near Lhatse County show shopfronts smashed and some roofs have caved in and debris lies on the streets.

The China Earthquake Networks Center says this is the strongest earthquake within 200 kilometers since five years. Rescue efforts have begun with rescuers and search teams digging and clearing through rubble to locate more survivors.

Impact on Region

Though tremors were felt in the Sikkim and Uttarakhand regions of India, along with Bhutan, there has been no loss of life and no serious property damage so far in India. Nepal, lying in a seismically active zone as a result of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, also experienced the effects of the quake.

Historical Background

The Himalayan region is seismically active due to the movement of tectonic plates. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal killed nearly 9,000 people and caused extensive damage, which was a grim reminder of the vulnerability of the region.

As rescue efforts continue in Tibet, authorities are closely monitoring aftershocks and assessing the full extent of the damage. The earthquake has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness in this geologically active region.
