The US on Tuesday shot down the speculation about expelling Indian diplomats from Washington, a day when India-Canada ties touched a new low with diplomatic tensions brewing in India after Canada revoked India's diplomat-designate over espionage concerns. "I'm not aware of any expulsion of Indian diplomats," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told the reporters in his first media briefing here.

India-US Relations: U.S. Denies Expulsion of Indian Diplomats

With speculations that a similar situation may prevail in the U.S., following reports that Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other diplomats were recalled from Canada,  the U.S. government has now categorically denied it. Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have been strained lately. As a result, the reciprocal expulsions of diplomats took place. To Canada's actions, India retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats, while the reciprocal act was carried out on six Indian diplomats from Canada. India also pulled back its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, over security issues for its diplomats in the country. The motives of the tension between India and Canada are essentially as a result of the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada has pinpointed several Indian diplomats who allegedly masterminded the killing of Nijjar case. However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs believes that it has lost all confidence in the Canadian Government's ability to protect and ensure the safety of diplomats, which led to its recall of diplomats and higher-level personnel. The above actions represent a low point for India-Canada relations with both countries trying to deal with these diplomatic challenges while some other allies, such as the U.S., keep staying neutral and refuse any expel-related moves concerning Indian diplomats.
