A 24-year-old youth Vignesh who stabbed an oncologist at Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital, Dr. Balaji Jagannath, who was treating Vignesh's mother for cancer was arrested in Chennai. Reports say that Vignesh suspected that the doctor had given his mother a wrong drug meant for the treatment of her cancer and stabbed the doctor multiple times.

Video of the same incident reveals Vignesh peacefully walking out of the place after assault and throwing away that knife stained with blood. While he was exiting people shouted: "He cut him up!" and pleaded security to catch him. Few minutes after this incidence the security caught him, as other people made efforts to stop him. In the scuffle, a lady intervened and stopped the brawl; thus, Vignesh was handed over to the police.

Dr Balaji received head injuries on the forehead, back, behind the ear, and on the abdomen. The particular reason to be worried is the presence of a pacemaker. Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that Dr Balaji was stable at present and put in the ICU.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered an inquiry into the incident while declaring that the government was committed to preventing attacks on doctors. Service of doctors is praiseworthy, and we must protect their safety, he said, promising protective measures for healthcare professionals.

The incident highlights increasing concerns over the safety of the medical practitioners in the country, more so after the recent case in Kolkata, where a young doctor was brutally killed. Following this incident, the Supreme Court had suggested that a National Task Force be set up, and this group has come up with recommendations on how doctors can be better protected while on duty.
