World Diabetes Day (WDD) is the international day of awareness, which is observed annually on November 14. This day is dedicated to enhancing greater awareness for diabetes, one of the fast-spreading chronic illnesses around the world.

This day is organized by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization to deal with the dangerous consequences of diabetes, prevention, and ways to handle the condition effectively. Each year's theme highlights an essential aspect of diabetes care; in 2024, the theme "Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps" underlines the commitment to available, affordable, and quality care for every person with diabetes.

History and Importance

WDD was introduced by the IDF and WHO in 1991 with the increasing diabetes crisis. It was recognized by the United Nations in 2006; it is declared an urgent health concern. November 14 is chosen to commemorate Sir Frederick Banting who in 1921 was among the co-discoverers of insulin, which transformed the disease into a manageable rather than a terminal one. WDD continues doing important work on awareness, education for early diagnosis, and lifestyle changes that facilitate diabetes management.
