Maharashtra Assembly Polls: Mumbai's Voters Go Past 1 Crore, Making It History
Mumbai crosses the 1-crore mark ahead of Maharashtra Assembly polls: official All set for November 20 polls Total number of electoral citizens in Mumbai for the upcoming polls on November 20 reaches 1,02,29,708. It's a rise of 29 lakh voters from the 98.95 lakh voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This was disclosed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Chief Bhushan Gagrani.
This rise in voter numbers comes as a crucial indicator of growing political engagement in the city, which includes 25,43,610 voters in the island city and 76,86,098 in the suburban district. Of this voter base, there are 54,67,361 men, 47,61,265 women, and 1,082 transgender voters. The poll officials also highlighted the inclusion of 2,288 overseas voters and 1,475 service voters, further illustrating the diverse representation in Mumbai’s electorate.
Maharashtra Assembly polls are scheduled on November 20, whose results will be counted on November 23. The Voter of these new assemblies is 2.91 lakh since the Lok Sabha elections besides 43,020 voter deletions have been done. This signifies that the efforts to update the voter list are still going for cleaning up the poll data.
Infrastructure of elections in Mumbai- Security and polling booths
A total of 410 candidates will contest for seats in 36 assembly constituencies in Mumbai, out of which 10 come under the island city and 26 under the suburbs. To keep the voting process smooth, the city has designated 10,117 polling booths with proper security arrangements to ensure secure elections. About 25,696 police officers will be deployed across the city, but there will be a special focus on 76 critical booths where the voter turnout has traditionally been low.
To further make the process more accessible and inclusive, the authorities will also use 84 model polling stations, of which 38 will be managed by women and young staff, and 8 stations run by disabled staff. With the C-Vigil app to report election-violation complaints, hundreds of complaints were resolved, and citizens saw the commitment to free and transparent elections.
Election Seizures and Law Enforcement
In this respect, Mumbai has already seen the seizure of large sums of cash, precious metals, and narcotics. So far, authorities have seized ₹33 crore in cash from the island city and ₹12.60 crore from the suburbs, and ₹6.97 crore in precious metals from the city and ₹238.67 crore from the suburbs. besides over 40,000 liters of alcohol and drugs to the tune of ₹48.96 crore, the seizures beneath underscore the vigilance of law enforcement machinery during poll season.
A significant increase in voter numbers coupled with stringent security measures and proactive enforcement puts the stage for a high-stakes Maharashtra Assembly election that can decide the political fortunes of Mumbai.
