Relatives Scurry through Kurla Hospital in the Hunt for Survivors after the Deadliest BEST Bus Crash in Mumbai
 

Immediately after the worst BEST bus crash in the history of the Mumbai region, the injured and those who claimed to have sustained injuries as well stormed the Kurla Bhabha hospital where pandemonium was written on every face while looking out for the missing persons. On Monday night, the hospital became a scene of turmoil with injured victims being rushed from the scene of the crash. Ambulances and hospital staff scrambled to attend to the victims, as worried relatives anxiously waited outside, some in tears, hoping for news about their family members.

Vijaya Shinde, the nurse incharge for duty confirmed that 31 victims of the Kurla bus accident were admitted and being treated in the said hospital. However, the scene inside was indelibly stamping one's senses. The staff inside were working under pressure. Some injured victims were referred to other hospitals due to the unavailability of certain medical facilities such as portable X-rays and neurosurgery.

One of the victims, a vegetable vendor Fazloor Rehman, sustained injuries when he was hit by the out-of-control BEST bus while traveling from Ghatkopar to Kurla to buy medicine for diabetes. Rehman suffered head injuries. His family members escaped with minor injuries. A two-year-old girl, Miskat Fatema, who was taken to the hospital nearby, has been treated for injuries resulting from the same crash. Her uncle, Imran Sheikh, relates that Miskat was riding in the rickshaw with her family when the bus plowed into them.

Injimam Sheikh said he had just walked into the market with his family when a bus hit him. Several family members, including his cousin Mehtab Sheikh who is critically injured, have been taken to different hospitals for treatment. Police personnel on duty were also among those injured, including Ravindra Bhavsar who was struck by the steering wheel as the bus collided with the police van.
