Pune Faces CCTV Disruption Ahead of Ganesh Festival: 1,000 Cameras Out of Order
In a startling development just before the Ganesh Festival, Pune is grappling with a significant issue involving its CCTV network. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which had invested several crores of rupees in installing a total of 2,909 CCTV cameras across the city, has revealed that 1,000 of these cameras are currently non-functional.
According to the PMC's electrical department, out of the 2,909 CCTV cameras installed, only 1,855 are operational. The malfunctioning cameras have raised concerns, particularly as the city approaches the Ganesh Festival, a time when public safety and surveillance are crucial.
Although the CCTV cameras were installed by the PMC, the maintenance and control of these cameras fall under the jurisdiction of the Pune police. The lack of clarity regarding who will bear the cost of repairing the inoperative cameras has led to their continued disuse.
The situation has led to calls for immediate action to address the malfunctioning cameras to ensure effective monitoring and public safety during the upcoming festival season.
