Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail Acquires 51% Stake in Mothercare Venture
New Delhi: In a major business expansion move, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, has announced a Rs 175 crore (approx. £16 million) deal through Reliance Retail Ventures to form a joint venture with Mothercare PLC, a global leader in products for parents and young children. This venture is set to expand Reliance’s retail footprint across India and neighboring countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
Under this joint venture, Reliance Retail will hold a 51% stake, while Mothercare PLC will retain the remaining 49%. The new company will operate through Reliance Brands Holding UK Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Brands, owning all intellectual property rights for the Mothercare brand in South Asia.
Expansion into South Asia
The joint venture aims to combine Mothercare’s global brand recognition with Reliance’s extensive market presence. Currently, Reliance Retail operates 87 Mothercare stores across 25 cities in India and has a growing presence on e-commerce platforms.
