Origin of Tablighi Jamaat and First Madarsa in Nuh, Haryana: The Legacy of the Spread of Islam

The importance of Islamic history can be succinctly described as attributed to the city of Nuh, Haryana, and its contribution in being the birthplace of Tablighi Jamaat, housing the first Madarsa globally. Quite close to a century ago, Maulana Ilyas led the establishment of Tablighi Jamaat in 1925. The movement currently reaches across countries, carried on from India by motivating people to stay away from ignorance and evils, going on to spread Islamic teachings.
In 1922, three years before the official establishment of Tablighi Jamaat, Nuh was the locale where the first Madarsa, Moinul Islam, was developed. At first, it was a small structure, but it has been greatly developed in the last decades and is now a magnificent institution for education and a very proud architectural marvel for this Muslim culture deeply rooted in this city.
Nuh holds great importance in Islam, not just because of its historic Madarsa but also for its contribution to the rest of the world in disseminating Islamic teaching. The Hilal Committee here at Nuh releases its decisions concerning moon sighting on festivals like Eid and Bakrid, thereby adding more importance to Nuh in the Islamic world. Thousands throng Nuh every Friday for their prayers; spiritual importance continues to build up here at Nuh.
However, the city's history does not lack struggle. Nuh faced a setback in 2023 when violence broke out during the procession of its religious people. Yet, religious institutions of the city and its Madarsa continue to flourish and this plays an essential role in nurturing Islamic education and spreading faith.
The history of Nuh also tells a story related to the salt trade. A century ago, Nuh's inhabitants were involved in salt production, due to the salt water sources present in the area. Now, Firozpur Namak village reminds us of that history.
Nuh’s Madarsa, which was initially a modest establishment, is now a major center of Islamic learning, attracting students from across the country and beyond. Despite being one of the most backward districts in Haryana, the population of Nuh is steadily growing, and its infrastructure continues to improve.
Apart from Islamic historical value, Nuh houses the ancient Hindu temples, Nalhreshwar and Jhirkeshwar. The mixture of such a rich cultural and historical tapestry makes Nuh diverse enough in its heritage-the temples are said to be linked with Kauravas and Pandavas.
Thus, Nuh remains a place of great historical and religious significance since it is where the first Madarsa was established, and the roots of Tablighi Jamaat took hold. These contributed to the spread of Islam and cultural heritage still shape the identity of the region today.
