Telangana Bans Raw Egg Mayo After Hyderabad Momo Mishap Sparks Food Safety Alert!

The Telangana state banned the use of raw egg in mayonnaise for one year after a momos mishap led to the death of a lady. The woman died after taking the momos suspected of having raw egg mayonnaise. Fifteen have been reported to fall sick with food poisoning. The ban was enacted immediately, as the risk of contamination associated with raw egg products commonly found in foods such as momos, sandwiches, shawarma, and grilled chicken was reduced.

The Growing Concern Around Raw Egg Mayonnaise

The Telangana Food Safety Commissioner said in a statement, "With multiple complaints already received to the effect, it's noticed that consumption of such raw egg-made mayonnaise has linked health conditions, mainly food poisoning," thereby adding that production, storage, and selling of such raw egg-based mayonnaise will continue to remain banned till 30 October 2024.

According to the Food Safety Commissioner, "Observations over recent months have shown that raw egg mayonnaise poses a risk of food poisoning." In addition, the Telangana government said that food safety alerts will be issued to the public in case health risks are found, thereby reiterating the state's commitment to food safety.

Food Poisoning Incident Triggers a Wave of Food Safety Action

This follows a 31-year-old woman who has died from food poisoning triggered by eating momos at a stall in Hyderabad. Health officers confirmed that the woman was part of 15 other people who had eaten momos distributed by a common supplier who's main suspected offender for using raw egg mayonnaise. The case frightened food safety practice; for this reason, the government has raided several shawarma and mandi markets within the city.

This incident has also brought back previous food poisoning incidents at shawarma outlets, which made health authorities launch a citywide crackdown to enforce stricter standards in food places so as not to record such cases again.

Strengthening Food Safety Standards for Consumer Protection

This prohibition has made the Telangana health department instruct the local food safety authorities to implement these rules strictly. The order also included stipulation for regular inspections and adherence to safe food handling practices, especially with raw ingredients, on the part of food vendors.

Food safety campaigners welcome the step as raw egg products may pose serious danger if not handled and stored properly. In this way, with the ban on raw egg mayonnaise for one year, Telangana consumers are being safeguarded, as well as food sellers who will face responsibility in case of health infringement.
