UP takes bold step: Producing garlic at cheap seeds for the farmers as state tries to spice up garlic production

In view of the enhanced rate of garlic, this scheme has been initiated by the UP government with the objective of promoting garlic cultivation within the state as well as aiding the farmers. The Horticulture Department has made an approved unit cost of ₹ 30,000 with a percentage subsidy to the tune of 40% per hectare equivalent to ₹ 12,000 per hectare. The land area shall range between a minimum of 0.2 hectares and a maximum of 4.0 hectares per farmer.

The National Horticulture Research and Development Foundation at New Delhi would provide seeds of garlic at ₹370 to ₹390 a kg. With this scheme sponsored by Government of India, 10,000 hectares of additional area would be brought under the cultivation of the state.

Special Programme for Increasing Garlic Cultivation

This is a phase of the efforts to expand spice crops, primarily garlic," said Minister of State for Horticulture, Dinesh Pratap Singh.

The per-hectare cost of cultivation of garlic has been estimated to be ₹30,000, and seeds will be sold at a discounted price of ₹370 to ₹390 per kg to registered farmers.

Here's how you can get registered online:

The implementation of Scheme will be strictly based on the first come and first served. Applicants who are willing to take up farmers can contact the district horticulture office or else they can register their details in the official website: http://dbt.uphorticulture.in.

Aim 10,000 hectares under Garlice Farming

In an endeavor to meet the increasingly growing demand for garlic, UP government aims at growing garlic in an additional 10,000 hectares under the scheme of Spice Crop Expansion, whose proposal is under approval from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for fiscal year 2024-25.

This effort will not only make the farmers get the economically good returns but will also intensify the production of garlic across the state along with making an assured supply with the increasing demand.
