27-Year-Old Vengeance Turns Horrific Tale of Revenge in Varanasi, Five Family Members Murdered in Chilling Revenge Saga End

Varanasi, India — A murder case that sounds like a script from a crime thriller has sent shockwaves across the city of Varanasi, as comparisons to the revenge-themed gangster dramas "Gangs of Wasseypur" echoed through public talk. All five victims were members of an affluent family engaged in the liquor business who were killed inside their home, each with two gunshot wounds to the head and chest, replete with disturbing questions about a 27-year-old feud that may finally have blown its top in a blood-soaked act of vengeance.

On 5 November, police were told about this gruesome discovery at the house of Rajendra Gupta, a leading liquor trader in the city of Varanasi. Here, all Rajendra's wife Neetu, their two sons Navnendra and Subendra, and their daughter Gaurangi were shot dead. Evidently missing was Rajendra himself, and the police suspected him of being involved in the murders. However, during the course of the investigation, his body was found much later inside an under-construction building where he had been shot in the head and chest, and strangely, the naked body only added to the mystery of this already puzzling case.

A sensational murder brought to the minds reminiscent memories of a grim family history when in 1997, Rajendra Gupta had murdered his young brother Krishna Gupta and his wife. This first murder had resulted from the family squabble over inheritance and property. Rajendra's father was fond of Krishna and provided most of his business enterprises to him, which was one of the reasons that made Rajendra kill his brother in anger. He was later accused of having plotted his father's assassination in 2003 after doing time in prison. All the crimes notwithstanding, Rajendra continued to flourish in business while his brother's children - Vicky and Jugnu grew up with an overdose of bitterness.

Twenty-seven years later, finally, the police suspect Vicky, the nephew of Rajendra. Vicky had already come in the open about seeking revenge against his uncle, and reportedly, he disappeared right after the killings. Police have gathered several proofs to link Vicky with this crime that includes brother-in-law's testimony which witnessed that Vicky claimed he would kill his uncle on Diwali.

This murder, alleged to have been orchestrated as revenge for past violence, has thrown up some spooky coincidences. Like Rajendra's previous murders, the latest killings happened on a Tuesday and during Kartik Purnima, a day of significance for the family. All the family members had two bullets put into them in this killing, similar to the manner in which Rajendra had had two bullets in his body when he killed his brother years ago.

While the police continue their manhunt for Vicky, who is believed to have last been seen in Tamil Nadu, they are continuing to piece together testimonies from friends and acquaintances. However, until Vicky is brought to questioning, the extent of the truth will remain elusive, leaving Varanasi reeling from a case that exposes the length to which family grudges can go and the chilling power of revenge.
