Salt Typhoon Strikes: Chinese Hackers Allegedly Target Trump’s Campaign in U.S. Election Cyber Attack

China hack group Salt Typhoon hit Trump's US election campaign, hackers allegedly stole election data from former President Donald Trump's campaign ahead of the US elections, report claims. The recent news from The New York Times is that a China-backed group, called Salt Typhoon, was trying to interfere with the communication networks of Trump and his allies like Republican Senator J.D. Vance in an attempt to influence the outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Foreign Interference in Elections: Old Story

Foreign interference in the elections of the United States is nothing new. There have been some election cycles where the focus has been on foreign entities, especially China, Russia, and Iran, manipulating the election process. As far as this case goes, reports show that it was not only the efforts of Salt Typhoon regarding the Trump campaign but also a case where the Democratic candidates Kamala Harris and Tim Walz were targeted as well. Apparently, the hacking group has been able to access the communications of both Republican and Democratic candidates. That raises a question whether U.S. cyber defenses are that weak.

Did China Gather Classified Data?

The hackers reportedly penetrated the networks several days before the election. Other election cycles have also had accusations of interference, with Trump's campaign accusing Russian and Iranian groups of trying to interfere previously. This alleged attack on Verizon's infrastructure, one of the key players in U.S. communications, would indicate that China might be trying to get an edge on U.S. election strategies. It remains unclear, however, whether the hackers accessed or downloaded any critical data.

Who is Salt Typhoon?

Salt Typhoon is the term Microsoft's cybersecurity group refers to a Chinese government-sponsored hacking group. Microsoft gives the term "Typhoon" to Chinese hacker groups, brands Iranian groups "Sandstorm," and brands Russian groups with "Blizzard." The word "Salt" in Salt Typhoon identifies that the group is uniquely specialized in counterintelligence activities and not in traditional cybercrimes such as data theft from companies or financial fraud.

Consequences for U.S. Cybersecurity

This incident brings forth the need for better protection of sensitive information through effective cybersecurity in this digital age where cyber threats from foreign nations grow more sophisticated. News is forcing U.S. officials and cybersecurity experts to act to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

As investigations continue, the public awaits confirmation on whether Salt Typhoon's attempts were successful and if any preventative actions can be taken to secure future election cycles from foreign interference.
