Recently, a video going viral has sparked an important debate on the essence of patriotism. The video raises this question: does one's level of education determine respect for one's country? In the video clip, a painter, seemingly in the middle of painting school walls, remains still with his paint stick when he hears the national anthem playing, while rationally positioned on a risky ledge.

The painter in the video, apparently unaware that he is being recorded, freezes in his tracks as soon as he hears the anthem. He stands there frozen, unlike other students who can be seen passing by with a nonchalant attitude and chatting with one another unperturbed by the national anthem being played in the background. The painter waits till the last note of the anthem fades away with his feet firmly planted in the dangerous position he's standing in. Since posting, the video has amassed over 37 million views and are growing with views and comments on the way.

Social media users disappointingly reacted to this incident.

Many of the people in social media have given comments saying they were really unhappy with the kids' way of behavior. "Respect for the anthem must be taught by parents side by side with academics" commented one of them, "This painter is more patriotic than these kids" observed another one, "This is what true patriotism is all about," said one.

In India, one stands straight as a sign of respect whenever the national anthem is played. Though there is no law that specifically forces one to stand during the anthem, yet by standing, one is seen to be doing the most polite thing that one can do. Even in cinemas, the national anthem is played before movies are screened.

This fuels much debate on the internet as many give more importance to ensuring young people are instilled with respect for the anthem and the country. The painter has been seen as the true example of patriotism.
