Huawei Unveils Mate XT: A Game-Changing Tri-Foldable Phone Amid US Ban

Huawei has launched the world’s first tri-foldable smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT, marking a significant milestone for the Chinese tech giant. Huawei’s Tri-Foldable Innovation
At a global launch event in Kuala Lumpur, Huawei introduced the Huawei Mate XT, which was first unveiled in China five months ago. The device, priced at 3,499 euros ($3,662), features a three-panel folding design, making it one of the thinnest foldable phones at just 3.6 millimeters. With a 10.2-inch screen, it offers an experience similar to that of an Apple iPad.
Industry analysts recognize the tri-foldable design as a groundbreaking innovation, positioning Huawei as a leader in the foldable smartphone segment. Bryan Ma, vice president of device research at IDC, noted that Huawei’s advancements come despite restrictions on accessing essential components and services such as Google’s ecosystem. U.S. Sanctions and Huawei’s Challenges
Huawei’s growth in the foldable smartphone market is occurring despite being at the center of the U.S.-China technology conflict. The U.S. government cut off Huawei’s access to crucial American technologies in 2019, citing national security risks—claims that Huawei has consistently denied. As a result, the company faces hurdles such as supply chain disruptions, lack of access to Google Mobile Services, and restrictions on component manufacturing.
These sanctions have made it difficult for Huawei to compete in global markets, particularly outside China. While the Mate XT is a technological breakthrough, analysts suggest that its high price tag and software limitations could prevent it from becoming a mainstream product.
Competing in the Foldable Smartphone Market
Huawei remains a dominant player in China’s foldable phone market, holding a 49% share in 2023. However, on a global scale, it trails behind Samsung, which leads with a 33% market share. IDC projects that global foldable phone shipments could rise to 45.7 million units by 2028, with Huawei playing a crucial role in this growth.
Other tech giants, including Samsung and Oppo, have already established themselves in the foldable phone industry, while Apple has yet to enter the market. Analysts believe that when Apple eventually launches a foldable iPhone, it could drive significant growth and competition in the sector.
Expanding Beyond Smartphones
In addition to the Mate XT, Huawei introduced other innovative devices at the event, including the MatePad Pro tablet and Free Arc, its first open-ear earbuds featuring ear hooks. These new products demonstrate Huawei’s commitment to expanding its portfolio despite ongoing international trade restrictions.
However, industry experts caution that Huawei’s long-term success will depend on overcoming critical challenges, including software ecosystem limitations, chip availability, and geopolitical tensions. Analyst Ruby Lu from TrendForce pointed out that without access to Google’s services, Huawei’s potential in the international market remains constrained.
