AAP Got Just 1.89 Lakh Fewer Votes Than BJP, Yet Lost 26 More Seats

The Delhi Assembly Election results have surprised many as the vote difference between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was minimal. According to the Election Commission, AAP received 41.34 lakh votes, while BJP secured 43.23 lakh votes. The difference of just 1.89 lakh votes led to a massive gap in seat count—AAP won 22 seats, whereas BJP claimed 48 seats.
Vote Count vs Seat Difference in Delhi Elections
Despite receiving nearly equal votes, the difference in seat numbers has raised questions about vote distribution. Delhi has a total of 70 assembly seats, with 36 needed to form a government. While BJP secured a comfortable majority, AAP saw a significant seat loss compared to the last election.
AAP Votes: 41,33,898
BJP Votes: 43,23,121
Congress Votes: 6,00,100
Other Parties & Independents: 87,000
NOTA Votes: 53,000
BJP’s Stronghold in North, South, and North-West Delhi
BJP dominated in North Delhi, North-West Delhi, and South Delhi, winning the majority of seats. On the other hand, AAP secured most of its victories in Shahdara and Central Delhi regions.
AAP Lost by Narrow Margins on Key Seats
AAP lost three key seats—Sangam Vihar, Trilokpuri, and Jangpura—by less than 1,000 votes.
Sangam Vihar: AAP’s Dinesh Mohaniya lost by 344 votes.
Trilokpuri: AAP candidate lost by 392 votes.
Jangpura: Manish Sisodia lost by 675 votes.
Additionally, AAP lost 12 more seats with margins under 10,000 votes, including Shahdara, Greater Kailash, Mehrauli, Malviya Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, and Palam.
BJP’s Big Wins and AAP’s Strongholds
BJP won Shalimar Bagh, Rithala, and Uttam Nagar with a margin of over 29,000 votes.
AAP secured a big victory in Matia Mahal with over 42,000 votes.
In Devli, AAP’s Prem Chauhan won by 36,000 votes.
Vote Shift: AAP Lost 8 Lakh Votes, BJP Gained 8 Lakh Votes
Compared to the 2020 elections, AAP’s vote count dropped significantly from 49 lakh to 41 lakh. Meanwhile, BJP gained 8 lakh additional votes, increasing from 35 lakh in 2020 to 43 lakh in 2025.
In 2020, AAP had secured 62 seats, while BJP had won just 8. This year’s election results indicate a major political shift in Delhi.
The Delhi Election 2025 results highlight how seat distribution played a crucial role in determining the winner. Despite a small vote difference, BJP’s vote distribution helped it secure a massive lead in seats, whereas AAP suffered significant losses. This shift in voting patterns signals changing political dynamics in the national capital.
