Nanded MP Vasantrao Chavan Passes Away in Hyderabad Hospital

Vasantrao Chavan, the Member of Parliament (MP) from Nanded, passed away early this morning while undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. He was 70 years old. Chavan had been suffering from respiratory issues and was initially treated at a hospital in Nanded before being airlifted to Hyderabad on August 13 for further medical care. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his illness.
Born on August 15, 1954, Vasantrao Chavan had a distinguished political career, starting as a Sarpanch and progressing to become a Member of Parliament. He served as a Sarpanch, a member of the Zilla Parishad, a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), and a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) before being elected as an MP.
Chavan's most notable victory came in the Nanded Lok Sabha elections, where he defeated BJP candidate Pratap Patil Chikhalikar by a significant margin of 59,000 votes. The election was highly contested, especially after former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan joined the BJP, leading many to believe that the BJP would secure a victory. However, Vasantrao Chavan, a seasoned Congress candidate, managed to win despite the BJP's strong campaign efforts, which included rallies by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Devendra Fadnavis.
Vasantrao Chavan had been receiving regular medical treatment for his health issues. On August 11, he attended a regional meeting of the Congress in Nanded, which was held in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections. The meeting, attended by senior Congress leaders including the party's state in-charge Chennithala, State President Nana Patole, and Leader of the Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar, was reportedly strenuous for Chavan, contributing to his deteriorating health.
His passing is a significant loss for the Congress party, particularly in the Nanded region, where he was a respected and influential figure. The party and his constituents are mourning the loss of a dedicated leader who played a crucial role in the region's political landscape.
