Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Friday defended party MP Arvind Sawant's controversial comments about Shaina NC, the Mumbadevi candidate from CM Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction.

In a clarification to ANI, Raut said, "No insult is intended. This is something Arvind Sawant, a senior MP of ours, stated in general terms referring to Shaina NC as 'imported maal' because she's an outsider running in Mumbadevi. If she is 'imported maal' how can this be insulting to women? It's a normal term. Whatever has been said about Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi? Study history… Anyone who comes from outside the area contesting elections is known as an outsider. We needn't blow things out of proportion.".

Arvind Sawant is now booked under an FIR for allegedly calling Shaina NC "imported maal." In a viral video, Sawant is heard saying, "Imported goods won't work, original goods will."

A case was registered against Sawant on November 1 after Shaina NC filed a complaint at Nagpada Police Station under Sections 79 (insult to the modesty of a woman) and 356(2) (defamation) of the BNS.

Maharasthra CM Eknath Shinde came down hard at Sawant's statement describing it "highly condemnable". Speaking to ANI, Shinde said, "This is very unfortunate. To speak about a sister in this way… it reflects their mindset. They've previously insulted our sisters in Guwahati too. In the upcoming elections, all our sisters will ensure they learn a lesson."
