13-Year-Old Kerala Girl Takes ₹150 from Mother’s Bag, Travels Across Three States, Refuses to Return Home, Opts for Shelter Stay

A 13-year-old girl from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, took ₹150 from her mother’s bag and left home, embarking on a 1,650-kilometer journey across three states. She was eventually found on a train in Visakhapatnam. Despite her family’s efforts, the girl has refused to return home, choosing instead to stay in a government-run shelter.
Upon her return from Visakhapatnam, the girl was presented before the Poojappura Child Welfare Committee (CWC). When asked if she wanted to go back with her parents, she firmly declined. Even after meeting her parents and siblings, she remained resolute in her decision to stay away from home.
The CWC has decided to provide counseling for both the girl and her family. She will stay at the shelter for the next 10 days while undergoing counseling. If her mindset changes, she may be reunited with her family. If not, the CWC, in consultation with the government, will take further action.
District Chairperson Shaniba Begum stated that if the girl's current stance continues, appropriate steps will be taken in coordination with the government.
