Renovation of Attingal Palace’s Mukhmandapam Stalled for Months, Residents Express Concerns

Attingal – The renovation of the historic Mukhmandapam structure at the Attingal Palace has come to a standstill, sparking concerns among local residents. Despite the renovation work commencing three years ago, the project remains incomplete, with locals alleging that all progress on the project has ceased for several months.
The Attingal Palace, over 700 years old and located at Kollampuzha, is a remarkable example of Kerala's traditional architecture, featuring intricate stone and wooden construction. The ongoing renovation work aimed to preserve the architectural integrity of the palace, specifically the Mukhmandapam, which is under the care of the Archaeological Department.
With an allocated budget of ₹1.07 crore, the project initially saw the partial renovation of the roof and floor, with most of the roof tiles being replaced and the floor covered with polished black stone. However, subsequent work has reportedly halted, raising concerns among the community.
In response to the delay, Attingal Municipality Chairperson S. Kumari assured that steps are being taken to resume and complete the renovation work. The issue has also been brought to the attention of the concerned department minister.
The palace, known for its historical significance, especially in connection with the 1721 Attingal Rebellion, was declared a heritage monument by the government, with ₹3 crore allocated for its preservation in the 2020-2021 budget.
Residents remain hopeful that the renovation will soon be completed to restore the palace to its former glory.
