Cold Wave Continues in Kashmir Valley as Temperatures Drop: Chillai Kalaan Brings Harsh Conditions

The Kashmir valley remains in an unrelenting phase of the cold wave currently as falling temperatures are dropping because of extreme dryness in the region. Harsh conditions have particularly touched the places in North Kashmir, specifically Baramulla district where most of its water pipelines, open bodies, and streams have frozen at below freezing points of the area's temperatures. The cold wave, which has been continuing unabated, has posed quite a challenge to the day-to-day life of locals as they are in anticipation of the onset of Chillai Kalaan, a period of 40 days of the severest winter weather in Kashmir.

With the temperature dropping, the cold wave is posing unprecedented conditions for the people of Kashmir. Night temperatures have fallen below freezing, thereby intensifying the impact of harsh winter on the region. This leads to the frozen water supplies as the pipelines get stuck due to ice, where people of Baramulla and other areas of this valley face difficulties in drinking proper quantities as water supplies are not very certain. The cold wave results can also be seen due to frozen streams and open bodies of water across the entire valley.

Kashmir is presently experiencing Chillai Kalaan, which was expected a few days ago. This marks the start of the most bitter phase of winter in the region. Temperatures are likely to remain extremely low over the coming weeks. The valley is bracing itself for even colder temperatures, and the acuteness of the cold wave conditions is being felt. The locals are struggling with the harsh winter as freezing cold affects their ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.

The cold wave has caused it impossible for people to carry out their normal activities since the freezing temperatures make it unsafe to venture out for long periods. As the winter season advances in Kashmir, locals can only hope for a break in the severe weather conditions but they have to bear the hardships of Chillai Kalaan.
