LIVE: Assembly Elections 2024 Update : BJP on Track for Third Term in Haryana; Congress-NC Alliance Leads in J&K

As the counting of votes continues for the assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, the political landscape is evolving rapidly. In Haryana, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently leading in 48 out of 90 seats, while the Congress trails with 35 seats. This electoral battle marks a critical moment for both parties, as the BJP aims for a third consecutive term, while the Congress seeks to make a comeback after a decade in opposition.
The voter turnout in Haryana was impressive, recorded at 67.90%. Exit polls had predicted a strong performance for the Congress, but the BJP is defying expectations with its current lead. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has confidently dismissed the exit poll results, asserting that the BJP will secure a majority. “On October 8, we will form the government, and the Congress will blame the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) again,” Saini remarked.
The competition in Haryana is fierce, with several regional parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) also contesting. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has claimed that no government can be formed without their support. Key constituencies include Ladwa, Ambala, Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, and Adampur, where political heavyweights are battling for supremacy.
In Jammu & Kashmir, the counting marks a historic moment as it holds its first assembly elections since the abrogation of Article 370. The Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance is projected to secure a clear majority, currently leading in 48 seats. The BJP is trailing behind with 28 seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is struggling with just 3 seats. This indicates a significant decline in the PDP's influence compared to previous elections.
The political dynamics in Jammu & Kashmir have shifted, with NC leader Farooq Abdullah indicating a willingness to collaborate with the PDP to form a government if necessary. The voter turnout in this region was about 63.45%, reflecting a high level of engagement in a territory that has seen considerable political turmoil.
As the results unfold, the fate of many prominent candidates hangs in the balance. Vinesh Phogat, a Congress candidate in Haryana, is among those closely watched, while in Jammu & Kashmir, Iltijah Mufti is trailing in her constituency, marking a challenging phase for her party.
The outcome of these elections will not only determine the governance of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir but will also set the tone for future elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. The results are pivotal for both the BJP and Congress, as they navigate the political implications of the voters' verdict.
