Helmet Revolution Chandigarh: Helmets Must for Kids on Two-Wheelers, If Not Then Fines Will Have to Be Paid!
Road Safety: Chandigarh's Effort to Make Habits of Safety - Two-wheeler riders must wear Helmets; otherwise stiff penalties are to be paid!.
According to local authorities, helmet use is applicable for kids, and men and women have to wear it. The parents had been advised to make it a routine practice for their kid to wear helmets every time their kids ride a two wheeler. The authority is going to heavily fine people who will defy the helmet rule.
Stricter Enforcing of Helmet Laws
The Chandigarh Traffic Police have begun enforcing strict rules, targeting more parents who allow their children to ride without helmets. Parents whose children are over four years of age and riding on a two-wheeler without wearing helmets can so far be fined and penalized.
Now, it is issued not only by the old-fashioned policing but also by CCTV cameras and handheld devices operated by traffic police personnel. A child caught riding without a helmet will have the fine issued against the vehicle's owner up to ₹1,000, while in some instances, the driving license is suspended.
New Legal Provisions
This is one of those amendments made to the Central Motor Vehicle Act, which has recently been amended to include new section (Section 129) requiring all children over the age of four years to use helmets while riding two wheeler.
Their term in jail as punishment is not to be taken lightly. For first-time offenders, a fine of ₹1,000 would apply. For subsequent offenders, the penalty would be a fine of ₹2,000 for the second time, while for the third time, the above fine would accompany even suspension of driving license.
Other traffic violation penalties include the following:
Rs 1,000 fine for not wearing a seatbelt in cars.
Rs.1000 in case of jumping a red light, with possible suspension
Rs.1000 in the case of overspeeding, doubled on subsequent offense and tripled to Rs.5000 for third offense,
Drink driving offenses may result in confiscation of your car besides imposition of penalties upto Rs.10,000 by district courts.
Importance of Compliance and Safety
They also stress that the importance of all road users' safety overrides the rest. "The rules are there to ensure the safety of children and everyone on the roads, so those who are violating traffic rules will be strictly punished," said the traffic department.
Now, the initiative comes at a time when most of the public in Chandigarh is observing and learning about road safety. Thus, the city would effectively create an environment in which road safety becomes a way of life, and everybody, especially the youth, becomes habituated to following traffic rules and regulations.
