Milk Purchase Price Cuts in Karnataka: Farmers Protest Against State Government Amid Rising Collection Volumes

In Karnataka, several district milk unions have reduced milk purchase prices due to increased milk collection, resulting in economic losses. During the summer, milk collection declined, prompting most unions to raise purchase prices to benefit farmers. However, following the onset of the monsoon and increased rainfall, milk collection has surged beyond expectations, challenging the unions' ability to manage sales.

As a result of the surplus milk, unions are facing financial difficulties and have responded by lowering milk purchase prices to mitigate losses. This decision has sparked outrage among political leaders. BJP and JD(S) officials have criticized the government for its handling of the situation.

HD Kumaraswamy, Central Minister for Industries and Steel, condemned the government's actions, accusing them of exploiting farmers. He stated, "The state Congress government is burdening farmers with unfair policies. The reduction in milk purchase prices is a clear attack on the livelihoods of farmers."

JD(S) state core committee member C.V. Chandrashekar demanded immediate reversal of the price cut decision, emphasizing that milk unions in Bellary, Raichur, Koppal, and Vijayanagar have reduced the price by ₹1.50 per liter, from ₹30.50 to ₹29. He highlighted that while consumer prices have been increased in recent years, farmers' incomes have not seen significant improvements.

Congress, which recently raised milk prices for consumers by ₹2 per liter, is now accused of exploiting farmers. The JD(S) has called for the government to restore higher purchase prices and warned of potential protests if changes are not made.
