Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL Ordered to Launch 'Affordable Recharge Plans': TRAI's Major Directive

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed major telecom operators, including Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL, to introduce affordable recharge plans focused on calling and SMS services. This move aims to cater to users who don’t require data but are still forced to pay for it in current plans.
The Shift from Calling to Data-Centric Plans
Until 2016, telecom plans were primarily focused on calling and SMS services. However, the market changed drastically with the entry of Jio, as telecom companies began launching data-focused plans. These plans bundled data, calling, and SMS together, leaving users without the option of choosing only what they needed.
Increased Costs for SIM Activation
Due to the lack of call- and SMS-only plans, users are now required to spend around ₹200 per month to keep their SIM cards active. This includes paying for data even when it’s not required. For example, BSNL's ₹147 plan includes 10GB data, along with calling and SMS. Users who don’t need data are still compelled to pay for it.
Rising Costs in 2023
Adding to the burden, telecom operators increased the prices of their recharge plans in July 2023, making it even costlier for users to maintain active SIMs. Long-term plans are also data-inclusive, leaving no options for those seeking basic calling and SMS services.
TRAI's Solution
TRAI has urged telecom companies to introduce dedicated plans for calling and SMS services, offering reasonable validity and affordability. This will benefit users who don’t require data and reduce their monthly expenses.
